Signs of the Times

Source: Art Sadlier, Sunday March 20th 2011

In Matthew 24 Jesus tells us of a number of events that will take place prior to His return to the earth. All of those signs will be completely fulfilled prior to His return to the earth. In Matthew 24:6-7 the signs Jesus gives are called the beginning signs in verse 8. Luke refers to these beginning signs in Luke 21:28, “And when these things begin to come to pass, then look up, and lift up your heads; for your redemption draweth nigh.” Your “redemption” refers to the rapture. Therefore the beginning signs will take place prior to the rapture.

For some time now we have been seeing the beginning signs taking place. In recent days we have seen dramatic increase in the beginning signs. In the last decade we have seen some tremendous earthquakes. We have seen great earthquakes in Pakistan, the Philippines, Chile, Haiti, New Zealand and now Japan. These are some of the largest earthquakes ever recorded. Two of these earthquakes are said to have moved the earth off its axis, each by 4 inches.

The latest disaster in Japan is enough to convince any open minded person that the prophetic Word of God is being fulfilled.

However the minds of rebellious men are not open to God’s Word. The majority are saying that the problems the earth is facing are caused by man, through global warming. They go on to say that man can fix these problems by managing the environment.

God says that He intervenes in the affairs of men to bring men to repentance. Amos 4:9-11, “I have smitten you with blasting and mildew: when your gardens and your vineyards and your fig trees and your olive trees increased, the palmerworm devoured them: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD. I have sent among you the pestilence after the manner of Egypt: your young men have I slain with the sword, and have taken away your horses; and I have made the stink of your camps to come up unto your nostrils: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD. I have overthrown some of you, as God overthrew Sodom and Gomorrah, and ye were as a firebrand plucked out of the burning: yet have ye not returned unto me, saith the LORD.”

I do not believe that those nations that have suffered these calamities caused by God are necessarily any more wicked than others. I believe God is speaking to the whole world and warning of the great tribulation period that is soon to come.

We have seen unprecedented floods in Pakistan and Australia. Wildfires have also been unprecedented, while storms and bad weather have also swept over the whole world.

The tremendous upheavals in the Mideast are removing the political stability of the whole world. The terror attacks we have seen in the last decade are unprecedented in all of history. The rising threat of Islam to the world is also unprecedented. We have the growing nuclear proliferation threatens the destruction of the world.

Add to all this, the imminent collapse of the economies of the nations of the whole world. Then we have the warning of coming famines as food prices rise and will put food out of reach of more one billion people of the world.
